Victorian Nights – the Buzz is growing stronger every week …

If you go down to Sheringham, Cromer or Wells in May, you’ll be in for a BIG surprise. If you’re there over the weekend of 18th – 20th you’ll hardly believe your eyes!

There’s already a buzz about it, for plans are now in place to transform these three historic North Norfolk  towns back to a different, but very exciting, time … of the Victorian era!

It’s all about the Victorian Nights Festival – an exciting, ambitious event that’s happening all over Cromer, Sheringham and Wells for one glorious long weekend, starting on Friday 18th May and ending on Sunday the 20th.

Steam Train Rides, Pipe Organ playing, Victorian Fashion parades, Drama, Film Projections … and much more!

We may think our times are exciting enough, with regular advances in medicines, the Internet, advanced air travel, etc., but imagine – in Victorian times, there was a much bigger range of exciting new inventions happening, from the advance of the motor car, to the development of steam railways, and from breakthroughs in photography and cinema, to the widespread expansion of the seaside holiday, and new leisure pastimes for everyone… Now YOU can join in the fun, celebrate that era, and enjoy some never-to-be forgotten events!

Dare-devil stunts, Fire eaters, Circus Acts and Fairground attractions, Shipwrecks … there’s something for everyone!

The well-heeled Victorians certainly knew how to enjoy their leisure time in that period… and now YOU can share in all the excitement and entertainments – with twelve great events to enjoy over the weekend.

It all starts in Sheringham on Friday 18th May, with a glittering array of events, including:

  • A 35mm film show with comedy, news, drama and animation of the times, all shown through a 1912 restored projector.
  • Then there’s the Mo’s Tremendous Victorian Circus, a fashion show, and an expert’s  guided walk through Victorian Sheringham, taking in the history of the streets and architecture.
  • There’s also a fascinating talk and visit to the Fisherman’s Heritage Centre where you’ll be transported back to a dramatic Shipwrecked! Back to 1897’ event – and see the original Henry Ramey Upcher lifeboat that rescued many of the sailors of the time.

Take a free Victorian Train ride ‘through time’, witness an Escape Artist’s act, and learn how to do traditional Victorian Cottage Crafts …

From the long list of other great events in all three towns, you’ll discover a free ride ‘through time’ on the famous steam railway from Sheringham to Holt, and meet some intriguing characters who could be found on the railway of the Victorian era.  You’ll also have a chance to dress up in Victorian costumes, and pose for your very own Victorian portrait!

You’ll also discover how, in Victorian times, Cromer became one of the most fashionable towns in the whole country – when you visit the beautiful Victorian Pavilion on Cromer’s Pier. There are lots of other ‘fashionable’ events going on in the town, including an amazing original fire-breathing act, and a ‘Magic Lantern’ show.

You can also enjoy a great Victorian Family Day out at Wells, with craft workshops, tasty Victorian snacks to try, a tour of the Maltings buildings, and a quiz trail for children, among many other attractions.

Lots of FREE events, costumed characters to meet, Children’s Quizzes – and Prizes to be won, too!

So, whatever your plans for May, add the 18th, 19th and 20th of that month in your diary to take a step back through time, join in the fun, celebrate the great Victorian era, and enjoy some never-to-be forgotten events!

  1. Well there are only 2 weekends to go….

  2. We love this!

  3. The ‘Buzz’ above is a suggestion for a ‘countdown’ type of promotion – to build up the excitement before the 18th May. Now there’s only a month to go..! Best Wishes. Andy
